Seminar Topic: Management of Phase I Periodontal Therapy
Speaker: Dr. Sam Malkinson
Course Description:
This comprehensive course builds on the participant’s understanding of how to do a complete clinical and radiographic periodontal examination. Participants will explore the information gained in the examination and synthesize it into a diagnosis of inflammatory periodontal disease using the recently updated AAP classification system. The course will also focus on the moment when the patient returns for a re-evaluation following initial phase 1 non-surgical periodontal therapy. At this critical clinical juncture, important decisions need to be made about whether further therapy may be needed to treat residual periodontal disease, and about a patient's future periodontal maintenance schedule. Participants will work through cases in small group exercises and present their findings, followed by group discussion and Q&A.
Audience: Dentists & Dental Hygienists
Key Learning Objectives:
By the end of the session participants will be able to:
- Differentiate gingivitis and periodontitis
- Classify periodontal disease using the staging and grading classification as per the 2017 World Workshop Consensus Report
- Formulate an accurate diagnosis of periodontitis
- Create an initial periodontal therapy treatment plan
- Perform the step-by-step process when conducting the evaluation of the initial therapy appointment
- Recognize the critical decisions that have to be made at this appointment
